Paris to Amsterdam by Thalys (Eurostar) High-Speed Train

Best Way to Travel:

When it comes to traveling from Paris to Amsterdam, the Thalys high-speed train emerges as the unequivocal best way to make this journey. Here's a closer look at why:

Direct Train:

One of the most appealing aspects of the Thalys high-speed train is the convenience of a direct journey from Paris to Amsterdam. This means that you won't need to navigate any unnecessary transfers along the way. From the moment you board the train at Paris, you'll be on a seamless path to your destination, allowing you to focus on enjoying your travel experience without disruptions or delays.  You will board the train from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, or from Marne-la-Vallée Chessy (near Disneyland Paris). You will arrive in Amsterdam Central Station, but there is usually a stop at the Schiphol Airport and Rotterdam as well.  From Amsterdam Central Station you will use your train ticket to exit the station, and find the tram to your accommodations. We suggest the StayOkay Hostel Amsterdam Vondelpark. It was clean, quiet, family-friendly and perfectly located on the Vondelpark.  Our family enjoyed the daily breakfast, as well as the cafe, and bar so Mom & Dad could have a beer in the evening while the kids played a board game. It was a nice change from a hotel since they offer community spaces.  They also do a pizza night and simple a la carte meals. It was my first hostel stay with kids, and it was awesome!

Travel Time:

The Thalys high-speed train boasts an impressively short travel time, which is especially advantageous for travelers looking to maximize their time exploring both cities. The journey typically takes around 3 hours and 20 minutes to whisk you away from the romantic streets of Paris to the vibrant heart of Amsterdam. This efficiency ensures that you can make the most of your 5-day adventure without wasting precious hours in transit.

Departure Stations:

In Paris, you have the flexibility of choosing your departure station for the Thalys high-speed train. You can catch your train from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, or from Marne-la-Vallée Chessy (near Disneyland Paris). The train times were more limited travelling from Marne La Vallee, but it's convenient if you intend to visit Disneyland during your time in Paris.  In Amsterdam, the train arrives at the centrally located Amsterdam Centraal station, bringing you right to the city center's doorstep. This strategic choice of stations ensures that you are always well-connected to the heart of both cities.

Comfortable Seats:

Traveling by Thalys means experiencing the utmost comfort during your journey. The train offers spacious and ergonomically designed seats that are perfect for relaxation. Whether you're traveling alone, with a partner, or as a family, you'll find the seating arrangements conducive to a comfortable and enjoyable ride. Additionally, Thalys provides various classes of service, allowing you to tailor your travel experience to your preferences. Make sure to ensure your seat reservation has your party sitting together. If you can choose a seat of 4 facing each other, our family found that to be the most comfortable way to travel economy. Otherwise, the seats are similar to airplane seats.

Free Wi-Fi:

Staying connected while on the move is essential for many travelers. Thalys understands this need and offers complimentary Wi-Fi on board its trains. This means that you can stay online throughout your journey, whether you want to plan your Amsterdam adventure, stay in touch with loved ones, or even catch up on work. The availability of free Wi-Fi adds an extra layer of convenience to your travel experience.

Power Outlets:

Thalys trains are equipped with power outlets at your seat. This thoughtful feature ensures that your electronic devices, such as smartphones, laptops, or tablets, remain charged and ready for use upon arrival in Amsterdam. Whether you need to plug in for work or simply want to keep your devices powered for entertainment, you can do so without any hassle.

Reduced Carbon Footprint:

Opting for train travel, such as the Thalys high-speed train, is not only convenient but also environmentally responsible. Train travel has a significantly reduced carbon footprint compared to flying, making it a more sustainable choice for eco-conscious travelers. By choosing the train, you are contributing to a greener way of exploring Europe while still enjoying the speed and convenience of modern transportation.

To find the best rate, starting looking early so you can be flexible on your dates if possible. I found Tuesdays to be the day for cheap train tickets.

Sample Prices:

While the cost of Thalys/ Eurostart tickets can vary based on factors like class, departure date, and how far in advance you book, Thalys often provides competitive rates.

  • Standard Class: Prices starting at 35 EUROS ( I never found anything quite that low, but that is what their website advertises. The lowest I found was 75 Euros one-way)

Amsterdam is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, and your second day is all about delving into its treasures:

  1. Anne Frank House: Start your day with a visit to the iconic Anne Frank House. This museum offers a poignant and moving experience, providing insights into the history of Anne Frank and her family during World War II. Walk through the hidden annex where the family lived in hiding, gaining a deeper understanding of their wartime struggles. Make sure to reserve your time slot well in advance to avoid disappointment!!

  2. Van Gogh Museum: For art enthusiasts, the Van Gogh Museum is a must-visit. It houses an extensive collection of Van Gogh's masterpieces, offering a comprehensive journey through the artist's life and work. Marvel at the vibrant colors and emotional depth of his paintings.

  3. Vondelpark: In the evening, head to the Vondelpark, a sprawling green oasis in the heart of Amsterdam. Depending on the weather, you can enjoy a leisurely picnic, relax on the grass, or simply take a peaceful walk. The park often hosts open-air concerts and performances, so keep an eye out for any cultural events that might enhance your visit.

Day 3: Family-Friendly Fun

If you're traveling with children, day three promises fun-filled family activities:

  1. Kinderkookkafe: Start your day at Kinderkookkafe, a unique and child-friendly café where kids can become little chefs. In this Montessori-inspired cafe, children have the opportunity to prepare their meals under supervision. They can even choose to enter the cafe via stairs or a slide, adding an element of excitement to the experience.

  2. Heineken Brewery: Discover the brewing secrets of one of the world's most famous beer brands at the Heineken Brewery. The interactive tour offers a behind-the-scenes look at the beer-making process, and you can even enjoy tastings along the way (must be 18 years or older for this one!)

Day 4: Amsterdam on Two Wheels

Amsterdam is renowned for its bike-friendly streets and cycling culture, making day four perfect for a bike adventure:

  1. Rent a Bike: Start your day by renting a bike from one of the many rental shops in the city. Amsterdam's flat terrain and extensive network of bike lanes make it an excellent place to explore on two wheels.  You can rent a cargo bike if you are travelling with little ones, but beware that these are not super easy to use if it's your first time....and biking in Amsterdam can be a bit intense simply because of the number of people cycling!

You can explore the Jordaan district, visit the famous Flower Market, or venture into less-touristy areas to get a taste of authentic Amsterdam. Don't miss the tiny door that leads to Tony Chocoloney's for  the opportunity to buy a HUGE Willy Wonka style chocolate bar.

  3. Art and History: Consider a visit to the Rijksmuseum or the Rembrandt House to add a cultural touch to your bike adventure. These museums showcase Dutch art and history and are worth exploring if you have a passion for the arts.

As your 5-day adventure in Amsterdam draws to a close, here's how to make the most of your departure day:

  1. Dutch Breakfast: Before bidding farewell to Amsterdam, savor one last Dutch breakfast at a local café. Try traditional Dutch pancakes, freshly baked stroopwafels, or a hearty Dutch cheese sandwich to start your day on a delicious note.  Visit Pancakes Amsterdam for the best dutch pancakes!

Known for its unique atmosphere and entertainment, it offers a distinctive perspective on the city's culture and history.
