We’ve all been there: you’re halfway to the beach, the sun is shining, the kids are humming along to the vacation playlist, and then—someone in the backseat yells, “Did anyone pack the beach towels?!” Cue the frantic digging through bags, the sideways glances between adults, and the slow, sinking realization that no, no one remembered the towels. And now you’re facing a sandy, soggy beach day with nothing but your car’s seat covers and some grumpy adults.
Trust me, I’ve learned the hard way that forgetting even a few little things—like sunscreen, snacks, or that extra pair of water shoes—can turn a fun beach day into a cranky, chaotic scramble. When you’re juggling little kids, beach gear, and the ever-shifting moods of a full family, packing for the beach can feel less like prepping for a relaxing outing and more like staging a military operation.
Whether you’re loading up for a full week at a beach house, checking into a hotel room near the ocean, or heading out for a spontaneous sunny day trip, having a solid, easy-to-follow family beach packing list makes all the difference. After years of trial and error, sandy trunks, and melted snacks, I’ve finally figured out what’s worth bringing, what you can leave behind, and which small extras are important to my happiness.
And because I know how much brain space this stuff takes up, I’ve put everything together in a neat, printable checklist to help you prep without the stress. No more wondering whether you packed the rash guards, and no more sacrificing your family travel games to make room for four different kinds of sunscreen.
Let’s break it down—starting with the essential items, moving into the nice-to-haves, and finishing with a few smart tips that’ll make your next family beach trip your smoothest one yet.
My ultimate beach set-up!
The Essentials: Must-Have Beach Packing List for Families
These are the most important things you do not want to forget. No matter how long you’re staying—whether it’s a couple days at a resort or just a quick trip to your favorite beach—this is your non-negotiable list. If you are renting an Airbnb with beach gear, hopefully a bunch of this stuff is included!
Essential Beach Packing List
Beach towels – Bring one per person (unless you live in my family, where my husband always packs one less towel than there are people. Every time LOL!)
Beach chairs – For parents who want to keep sand out of places it doesn’t belong. These make your beach day so much more comfortable! The back-pack chairs allow everyone to easily carry their own seating, even the little ones. See below for photo proof that they can do it!
Beach umbrella or beach tent – Shade is a must for young children (and tired grownups), if you have shade and good seating (and snacks, you can easily spend a whole day at the beach).
Rash guards and bathing suits – Rash guards are a great idea for long sun exposure, especially on sunny days. It also saves you from having to re-apply sunscreen everywhere!
Reef-safe sunscreen – Don’t forget the ears, feet, and the back of the neck!
Sun hats – A must-have for everyone in the family.
Water shoes – For hot sand, coral reefs, and rocky beach entrances. Depending on where you are it might be your preference to forego this one.
Life vests or life jackets – Especially if your family member isn’t a strong swimmer or if you’re heading to deeper water. If you are snorkeling, always take a floatation device of some kind. It might be a boogie board or pool noodle, or a PFD, but always have something in the ocean.
First aid kit – Scraped toes and jellyfish stings don’t care if you’re on vacation. I only ever need my first aid kit when I forget it, so if you bring it…no injuries will happen!
Water bottle for each person – Staying hydrated is the best way to avoid meltdowns (and I mean mine).
Snacks & juice boxes – Keep hunger at bay. Bonus points if you bring ice packs in your cooler bag.
Beach blanket/mat – For picnics, naps, and corralling all the sandy items. It’s also nice to have a place off the hot sand for the kids to sit.
Wet bag or plastic bag – For storing wet swimsuits, wet clothes, or sandy flip-flops.
Change of clothes – Dry clothes = happy ride home.
Waterproof phone pouch – This has saved my cell phone from drowning more than once.
Lip balm with SPF – It’s easy to forget, but a burnt lip is no fun.
Disposable wipes – For cleaning hands, sandy toys, and sticky post-snack fingers.
Cooler- if you pack sandwiches and snacks, you’ll have way more staying more at the beach!
Beach Cart- If you are exploring beaches in Maui, the beach cart is amazing. You don’t get sweaty carrying everything to your spot! You can see the cart in the photo above.
This list may look long, but trust me—these are the essential beach packing list items we don’t leave home without. They cover comfort, safety, hydration, sun protection, and sanity (hello, wet bag and juice boxes). Over the years, we’ve realized that bringing these basics makes the difference between a relaxing day on the sand and a sunburned, snack-deprived meltdown in the parking lot. If you're short on space, you can skip the extras—but these are the must-haves that earn their keep every single time. Whether you’re heading out for just a day trip or a family beach vacation for a few days, packing these essential items ensures you’ll spend less time stressing and more time having so much fun.
The Nice-to-Haves List (But Totally Worth It)
These aren’t mandatory, but packing them can turn your family beach trip from “fine” to “fantastic.”
Nice to Have Beach Gear:
Beach toys – Buckets, shovels, molds, and that magical tool that somehow makes building sandcastles even more fun.
Inflatable beach ball – Packs flat, provides hours of entertainment.
Travel towel – Quick-drying and compact. A great addition if you're short on space.
Family travel games – Perfect for breaks in the shade or rainy days at your vacation rental.
Extra pair of sunglasses – Because someone always loses theirs in the waves.
Baby powder – Weirdly genius for removing sand from feet before hopping in the car or heading into the hotel room.
Beach bag essentials organizer – Keeps all the little things (sunscreen, wipes, keys) in one place.
Ice cream containers – Repurposed as mini sand pails, snack holders, or shell collectors.
Waterproof bags – Perfect for long distance drives home with wet clothes or swimsuits.
Entertainment for adults – A good book, podcast, or just silence (also known as a great time).
These nice-to-haves may not be critical for survival, but they sure do make your family beach trip smoother, more fun, and a little less sandy in all the wrong places. Items like baby powder, travel towels, and an extra pair of sunglasses might seem small, but they’re the little things that can be a total game changer—especially when you're juggling young children, wet gear, and the occasional snack emergency. If you’ve got room in your beach bag (and your sanity), toss in a few of these extras. Whether it's rainy days at your vacation rental or just needing a break under the beach umbrella, having some comfort and entertainment options on hand is the easiest way to keep everyone happy—and maybe even sneak in a chapter of that book you've been carrying around since last summer.
A net bag for the sand toys is key. When you are ready to leave, you just rinse all the toys in the water at once, and leave the sand at the beach :)
Packing Tips for Your Next Family Beach Trip
If it’s your first time packing for a family beach day (or you’re just trying to remember what worked last time), here are a few extra pointers:
Start the packing process a day before. That way you’re not tossing everything in a bag five minutes before departure.
Designate one beach bag for each adult or older child so that everyone has personal items like their sun hat, rash guard, and snacks within reach.
Pack a cooler bag strategically: use ice packs, not ice, to avoid a wet mess.
Keep a plastic bag or wet bag in your trunk at all times. You’ll thank me.
Don’t overpack. It’s easy to bring too much stuff, but really, stick to the essential beach packing list and build from there.
If staying at beach resorts or renting a beach house, check in advance which beach gear they provide. Towels and umbrellas may be available, saving you from hauling your own at extra cost.
These tips might seem simple, but they’re the kind of lessons we’ve picked up over years of family beach vacations, forgotten items, and sandy car rides. The best way to avoid stress on your next trip is to plan just enough to stay ahead of the chaos—but not so much that you’re packing like you’re moving in. Whether you're heading to a resort, a rental, or just down the road for a quick day trip, the goal isn’t to bring everything—it’s to bring the right things. And honestly, every family member is happier when they have what they need without carrying what they don’t. So start early, keep it simple, and don’t sweat it if you forget the baby powder—just remember it for next time.

Beach Days Done Right
Packing for the beach doesn’t have to be hard work, but let’s be honest—it can feel like it when you’re trying to keep track of hats, snacks, flip-flops, and at least one child who’s already wearing their swimsuit under their pajamas. But here’s the thing: with just a little prep and the right beach gear, the whole process becomes a lot less overwhelming and a lot more fun.
When you’ve got your essentials sorted—your reef-safe sunscreen, wet bag, juice boxes, and yes, even that extra pair of sunglasses—you can finally do what you came to do: enjoy the beach. You’re not running back to the car for forgotten towels or digging through sand for the only snack that didn’t melt. You’re soaking up the sun, watching your kids build sand castles, and maybe even sneaking in a few minutes of silence with your feet in the surf.
Whether it’s a quick day trip, a weekend at a vacation rental, or a longer family beach vacation, bringing the essential items means fewer meltdowns, more giggles, and those perfect, sandy, sun-kissed memories that last way longer than the sunscreen does. And yes—the sand will still end up in your trunk, under your floor mats, and somehow, in your wallet. It’s all part of the fun.
So grab your beach bag, fill up those water bottles, toss in a few snacks and a whole lot of patience, and you’re good to go. Trust me—you’ve got this.
See you on the sand (I’ll be the one with the baby powder and ice cream containers).
